We can start locally when it comes to enacting smoke-free workplace ordinances. In 2008, the South Carolina Supreme Court unanimously ruled that local governments have the authority to pass and enforce smoke free laws. Cities, towns, and counties have taken action to pass the laws that will truly protect all workers from secondhand smoke exposure.
Our goal is to continue to advocate for local smoke-free ordinances to be passed in Spartanburg County so that we can make our community a healthier place to live and work.
A study conducted by researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center (HCC) revealed significantly improved air quality in bars and restaurants in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant where smoke-free ordinances were implemented last in 2007.
* A smoking ordinance was not initiated in North Charleston
